DC Digital Comics store closes

The DC Digital Comics store will close on January 14, 2021. The online store and online reader were popular with people who wanted to read at work or through the web browser. Instead, you’ll need to download the DC Digital app for Android or iOS. All past purchases will still be able to be read on the Comixology apps, since Comixology has powered the DC Digital Comics store.

The closing of the online store paves the way for the arrival of DC Universe Infinite, their new online subscription service that offers tons of digital comics for you to read for a monthly subscription. DCUI will launch on January 21. The DC Universe is also an alternative, but only available to US members. It contains thousands of TV shows, movies and comics which have been converted to 4k. Last year, Marvel also shut down its online store and web player, and forced everyone to use its apps.

I don’t think the industry’s trend to shut down cloud-based readers and their online stores isn’t a good trend. Many other companies have scaled back their efforts in this space, including the Kindle Cloud Reader, which is on the verge of being discontinued. This alienates people who can’t use phones or tablets at school or work and can only use the browser to access content.
