Marvel has no plans to release any new digital comics on April 15

CBR has learned that Marvel will not be releasing any new digital comics this week.

CBR has learned that Marvel Comics will not release any new comic book titles digitally on April 15. This follows previous weeks where the publisher refused to release comics digitally, after Diamond Comic Distributors halted shipping of new comics due to the ongoing coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.

Marvel Entertainment President Dan Buckley released a statement the week of April 1 outlining the publisher’s plans not to release any comics digitally. “As you are aware, unfortunately, there will be no new print titles available in your stores this week. Marvel will also not be releasing new comic book titles digitally on April 1,” the statement read. “This is a fluid situation with details changing daily, so we appreciate your patience and understanding as we all navigate this. As more information becomes available, we will outline our plans and longer-term opportunities to support you and the industry.”

With no physical comics shipping or selling for the foreseeable future, publishers have individually decided whether or not to release digital comics, with the majority of the larger publishers deciding to forgo their release for April.

Diamond Comic Distributors CEO Steve Geppi issued a statement on the disruption of the comic book market by COVID-19, promising to “work with our publishing partners to develop programs that will address products already in the works and what what will happen when we resume distribution”.

Many comic book creators began fundraising to help their collaborators and retailers, with Jim Lee launching a charity auction of sketches and Donny Cates offering to buy commissions from artists.
