WEBTOON and CC today revealed a new slate of digital comics. Part of a previously announced creative partnership, the new slate of digital comics will be available exclusively on WEBTOON, introducing a new audience of comic book fans to the DC Universe and iconic DC characters. New original series will launch throughout 2022, starting with VIXEN: NYC (May 26) and RED RIDING HOOD: THE OUTLAWS and ZATANNA AND THE RIPPER launching later this summer. Final launch dates will be announced shortly.
The new slate follows the successful collaboration between WEBTOON and DC with Batman: Adventures of the Wayne Family. Launching in September 2021 with new episodes every week, Batman: Adventures of the Wayne Family offers fans a glimpse into the life of the legendary Bruce Wayne, exploring Batman’s adventures as the father of a vibrant group of adopted, foster and biological superhero children.
WEBTOON and DC’s full 2022 slate includes:
VIXEN: NYC (May 26), written by Jasmine Walls with lead artist Manou Azumi
Mari Jiwe grew up in a small beach town in North Carolina, but after graduating from high school she is looking to connect with her extended family in Ghana. There, she meets relatives who offer her a mysterious totem, passed down from generation to generation. Immediately after returning home, she moves to New York for her freshman year of college. Mari hates it. New York is smelly, dirty, and full of even smellier, dirtier animals. Locked in her room, she finally inspects the totem, inadvertently releasing its magic. She is struck with an energy that gives her the power of the animal kingdom… of New York.
Mari had a hard enough time navigating college as a normal girl, and now she must not only figure out how to become “adult”, but also how to become “superhuman”. Then, women, who look unusually like Mari, are kidnapped across town. Vixen learns that a distant and distant relative, General Maksai, is on the hunt, seeking the crystal for himself. To stop his warpath, Vixen will have to stop him. In doing so, she learns the true extent of her abilities. It turns out she’s capable of so much more than she thought.
RED HOOD: OUTLAWS (Summer 2022), written by Patrick R Young with art by Nico Bascuñán
Outlaws try to go legit – and fail spectacularly. The Justice League has issued a challenge to Red Hood, Artemis of Bana-Mighdall, and Bizarro, who must try to replace their goody-two-shoe counterparts as the heroes the world neither deserves nor needs.
In this original series, the Outlaws will face off against some of DC’s greatest supervillains and superheroes, but their greatest battles are with each other. Can this team last? And can they find their own identity separate from Batman, Wonder Woman and Superman?
ZATANNA AND THE RIPPER (Summer 2022), written by Sarah Dealy and lead artist Syro
Giovanni Zatara is one of the most talented magicians in the world. His daughter Zatanna, meanwhile, is among the most powerful in the world. On her 21st birthday, Zatanna witnesses a fight between her father and the witch Allura. Before Allura can reach his daughter, however, Giovanni blasts Zatanna away, to London, England…in the 1800s. Zatanna, she tries to use her budding magic to return home, but fails. What she can do, however, is pull things from the future (and past). So her tiny 19th century bedroom is now filled with modern gadgets. It seems she will be stuck forever until an old friend finds her – John Constantine. Recognizing her from her past or her future, he tells her that he knows how to bring her home. They will have to solve the Jack the Ripper murders. To make matters worse, Zatanna also quickly learns that she is among the Ripper’s targets.
In a gritty but magical journey (with a healthy dose of romance), Zatanna and John Constantine join forces to find and unmask Jack the Ripper.
